The Quizzes They Are a-Changin'
Two years ago we started this side project in lockdown which is now sent out to more than 15,000 people a week. It has been amazing watching so many people we don’t know (and some we do) be a part of this weekend club. What a time it’s been, but now it’s Saturday Quiz time (for a change).
Today we’ve launched a new version of Saturday Quiz. We’ve given it a fresh coat of paint, taken Sean Parker’s advice and removed the “The” from our name (too many people were confusing us with another publication) and implemented a soft paywall.
Paywall? What’s that you say? Yes, we’ve made the decision to keep the quiz ad-free and to introduce a paywall to help us cover costs. Up until now, the quiz has been self-funded by us (just two millennials with too much spare time) and our amazing paying supporters (who really weren’t receiving any added benefit, so for that we thank them a lot).
The one downside of growing our subscriber list has been the growing bill we have to pay to send out the weekly SMS. Unfortunately, sending out a group text to 15,000 people every week just isn’t sustainable for us. So from today we’ll be offering a premium subscription to our quiz. For just $5 a month or $50 a year you can enjoy full access to our quizzes and puzzles. That’s approximately $1 a quiz which we (in our humble opinion) think is totally worth it.
And when we say soft paywall we mean exactly that. We don’t want to pull the rug out from everyone. If you choose not to become a premium subscriber, you will still be able to play the first two categories (10 questions) every week. The soft paywall won’t kick in until you’ve played five quizzes - so there’s no need to rush. We’re just giving you a heads up.
We hope you enjoy the new look and feel (it’s not that much different, but there is confetti now). We’re looking forward to continuing to write questions week-in, week-out and receiving complaints when they’re too hard.
